Darkness Ascending is a Dungeons and Dragons 3.5e Eberron Campaign. To properly understand the setting and play you'll need the following books: The Eberron Campaign Setting, the Players Handbook, and possibly the Expanded Psionics Handbook. Other supplements which may be helpful include Sharn: City of Towers, Five Nations, and The Forge of War. Any of countless other D&D supplements could also be helpful, from Complete Divine to the Spell Compendium, but these books are not needed by any means. These books are all D&D 3.5 Edition, meaning they're out of print, or hard to find. They are out there however, used and new, and of course on the web if you're willing to look for them.
Set in a world scarred by war and divided by political and ideological differences, Darkness Ascending offers players a chance to shape the course of the nations of Khorvaire. Magical technology and outright wizardry combined over the years to provide the nations of Khorvaire with countless advancements to make life easier, or to make ending life easier. On a continent ravaged by war for over a century, hundreds of battle sites new and old remain, and older ruins and places of power dot the landscape as well.
People and entire nations are displaced, cities have been ravaged, and old enmities linger despite the new (some worry temporary) peace afforded by the Treaty of Thronehold three years ago. While many of the nations are nominally at peace and their borders open, intrigue rules behind the scenes with hidden spymasters, and plots within plots. Inquisitive agencies for hire search for lost loved ones, or escaped enemies, and countless mysteries remain in exotic Xen'drik across the sea to the south, or even on Khorvaire in the Mournlands. Hope for lasting peace stirs, but so too does the possibility of further bloodshed.
Nearly anything is possible in Eberron, if you can make it happen.
